I've Loved You For a Long Time

May Hands
17 February - 17 March 2018
Private View: 6-9pm Friday 16th February 2018

Supplement is pleased to present ‘I’ve Loved You For a Long Time’ an exhibition by May Hands. Hands’ practice explores the potential of the expanded field of painting and the opening up of the medium to include wider forms of activity. In balancing a cacophony of observational notes of textures, colours, materials, forms, shapes and emotions she creates work that behaves as collage, yet retains the quality and language of painting.

For the exhibition Hands has created an installation that brings together an array of materials that punctuate, divide and envelop the gallery space. The elements are combinations of man-made and found organic material, alongside fabrics which she has dyed using organic matter such as rose, turmeric and onion skins, drawing out their natural pigments of deep reds and yellows. Included are also two new paintings made with layers of scrim and netting.

Hands collects organic materials and discarded synthetic objects from her daily life, digesting and responding to her present and immediate environment. She places importance on capturing the essence and sensuality of her surroundings, not just the material objects found there, but the feeling, atmosphere, and her emotional connections to it also.

Hands’ work juxtaposes and contrasts natural and man-made materials to investigate these two different but related worlds. At the core of Hands’ practice is an engagement with the rituals and trends of consumer consumption, along with observing the transitioning of natural cycles, such as the seasons. Her thinking is often structured by relating different ideas such as the arranged and ordered, bare and barren, rich and lavish or skeletal and elegant.

This approach allows her to slow her experience of her surroundings, to be thoughtful and reflect upon the moment and its specific situation. There is an economy to the work that is deeply informed by seeking to minimise consumption and waste, through re-use and recycling in both her life and practice.

Reflecting upon qualities of the things that we consume, such as their design and utility, set against aspects of the natural and wild opens up questions of how society constructs and articulates value. For ‘I’ve Loved You For a Long Time’ the foraged and gathered elements are given a new context that honours a sense of fragility, tactility, awareness and sustainability.
