Private View: Friday 13th April 2018, 6pm til late

Supplement is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Mimi Hope, our last exhibition at the gallery. The show is comprised of three bodies of work that deal with ideas of transformation and longing, articulated through the subject of the National Lottery.

The National Lottery, alongside many other brands, appropriates images of the sky for its association with the heavens, enlightenment and freedom. The series Clouds reproduce images of the sky in lenticular prints, combining several images of the cloudforms slowly moving. At once static and in ux, the images are activated by the viewer’s movement around them. Lenticular printing is also used on £140 Million, a work in which the central image, a private jet, moves away from the viewer as they approach.

The Scratch Card series consists of a series of images that are covered in grey scratch card coatings. The works are to remain unscratched, the image concealed and inaccessible to the viewer. There’s a tense fragility to the work, a material that is designed to be removed must be preserved.

Fingers Crossed replicate The National Lottery ‘Play Here’ stand, rendering its form in jesmonite. The vivid blue of the original sign becomes a dull grey, the light plastic bubbles of the original seemingly hardening into concrete. The upwardly bubbling sculptures, the shifting clouds and planes signal a kind of arrested movement, further articulated in the endlessly deferred action of the scratch card works. There is a palpable sense of desire or aspiration but the works suggest these desires will always remain unful lled.

After ten years of the gallery, from its beginnings as a project space in Bethnal Green in April 2008 to its present incarnation, we’ve decided this will be our last exhibition. We’d like to take this moment to acknowledge the enormous amount of support and goodwill that gallery has always enjoyed from artists, critics, collectors, curators and friends. It has been a joy to work with such an amazing network of people.
