The Recession
14th October – 2nd November 2008

For The Recession Andersen has created a two room architectural installation. In the main gallery space Andersen has installed a painted ceiling that functions as a light box, light from above permeates the translucent coloured ceiling at once immersing and disconcerting the viewer. The constructed ceiling exists in a state of architectural play; its use of light and painterly technique generates a friction between the perceived real space of architecture and the illusory space of painting.

In the rear space are a series of works that lie between sculpture and painting. Like milestones they lean against the walls, functioning as pointers to Andersen’s interest in extending the idea of painting beyond its conventional surfaces and form.

Andersen is interested in the architectural idea of recession, of a concavity in a building that recedes from the main surface. A recession is an area that traps light in its withdrawal. Surfaces can be defined by the parts that drop out; the spaces of liminality that mark out their form. It is this peripheral space that Andersen’s practice occupies in its approach to the history and possibilities of painting.
